Crowds and cliques serve different purposes identity and social skills. Crowds contribute to definition of norms for e. g. clothing, leisure, tastes in music. Crowd is important influence on behavior, activities and self-concept (and identity) If you go by the average, jocks generally have the highest self-esteem. Higher status groups likely to have higher self-esteem than in a school where that group did no have a high status. Crowd membership as predictor (breakfast club identities only 5 to pick from) Study looked at pro-social activities (volunteering, class council, yearbook club, etc. ) Asked what activities they participated in related that to how well they did after high school. People who engaged in pro-social activities did less drugs, more likely to graduate college, People who did sports higher educational outcome. Performing arts higher education, more alcohol use, and higher emotional problems.
