~cerebellum means little brain and it looks like a little cerebrum. Covered by cerebellar cortex, has deep cerebellar nuclei. The deep nuclei get projections from cerebellar cortex and send projections to other areas. Cerebellum is attached to pons via superior/medial/inferior cerebral peduncles (bundles of axons) Makes movement smooth, otherwise it would be jerky. Has part of the rf deep in its core. Has some nuclei involved in sleep and arousal. Has a large nucleus that relays from cerebral cortex to cerebellum. ~myelencephalon in hindbrain just one major structure, medulla oblongata. ~medulla is the most caudal part of the brain stem. ~medulla has some rf has nuclei controlling vital functions like heart, respiration, muscle tonus. ~the cord is as thick as a pinky. ~purpose is to distribute motor fibers to effector organs (muscles and glands) and to send somatosensory info to brain. ~is kind of autonomous from brain, has some reflexive control circuits.
