01:830:313 Lecture 39: Physiological Psych Ch. 11
Limbic system
4 main parts - Vital functions; learning; emotion; motivation
Emotional response consists of three types of components - behavioral, autonomic, hormonal
- Behavioral - muscle movements
- Autonomic - Responses facilitate the behaviors and provide quick mobilization of energy
for vigorous movement, sympathetic activation
- Hormonal - Responses reinforce the autonomic responses, epinephrine and
norepinephrine are hormones secreted by the adrenal medulla, increase blood flow to
muscles, specifically stress hormones
The nucleus accumbens definitely plays a central role in the reward circuit. Its
operation is based chiefly on two essential neurotransmitters: dopamine, which
promotes desire, and serotonin, whose effects include satiety and inhibition.
Integration of fear appears to be controlled by the amygdala
- Plays a role in physiological and behavioral reactions to objects and situations that have
biological significance
Three major regions of the amygdala - lateral nucleus, basal nucleus, central nucleus
Lateral nucleus receives info from all the regions of the neocortex - ventromedial prefrontal
cortex, thalamus, hippocampal formation
- Sends info to the basal nucleus and to other parts of the brain including the ventral
striatum for learning
Lateral hypothalamus projects to lateral horn of spinal gray matter
a. directly (monosynaptically)
b. indirectly via brain stem autonomic centers that project to lateral horn
Neural output connections of the hypothalamus
LH --> lateral horn --> NE axons -->
1. Increase heart rate
2. Increase blood pressure
3. Increase breathing
LH --> lateral horn --> adrenal medulla -->
adrenalin (Epi), noradrenalin (NE) -->
