Learning and automatically like driving a car. when first learn you have to focus on so many things but as you practice that goes away. becomes more automatic. but cant text and drive, stuff on the road becomes invisible to you. even though breaking still automatic but decision making is not, Stroop task: about automaticity. feel conflict between the color of the word and what the word actually says. interference from the word, because reading is reflective and automatic. automaticity of the reading response. once people know how to read cant turn it off. can ignore the word and just repeat color but cant ignore the automatic response to read it. would usually measure reaction time, there is a hesitation. slightly slower when words conflicts with color when word matches color= congruent when word no match=incongruent not interference if do opposite, reading is automatic. verbal response to what color is not automatic.
