Document Summary

How to make (and therefore interpret) sentences. Nonsense sentences can be coherently english/syntactically correct. Generative grammar - produces all and only legal structures for that language. Symbol on the left, arrow, symbol on right ( symbol goes to/can be rewritten as symbol ) Np (noun phrase) -> det adjp n. Symbols that go to words are terminal. Noun is a syntactic concept instead of a semantic concept. Symbol in your head will interpret certain words as nouns (ie the run chased the cat - run is interpreted as a noun) External symbols are the actual words - linguistics studies the mental model of those words. People tend to hear the tone at the largest gap (how high up the division is ie the split after npvp) People only hear pauses in words because they are mentally separating the words. Perception of the gap reflects the rewrite rules tree.
