Document Summary

Altruism: helping others despite a cost to ourselves. You"re better off competing with your partner by confessing and trying to get a better deal. Your partner"s better off competing with you by confessing and trying to get a better deal. In life, you"re frequently better of cooperating. You want to be seen as fair and helpful. When most people cooperate, they punish those who don"t. Diffusion of responsibility- we feel less responsibility to act when other people are equally able to act. Since everyone is equally responsible, the more people that are available, the less i am personally responsible. Maybe there"s a reason others aren"t helping. Pluralistic ignorance: a situation in which people say nothing, and each person falsely assumes that others have a better-informed opinion. The tendency to loaf (or work less hard) when sharing work with other people. And not when each person has a specific, identifiable, role to play.
