Emotions & the body- emotion affects the body. Emotions & the mind- bodily reactions are interpreted by the mind. Primary emotion- considered to be universal & biologically based. Basic emotion- an innate emotion that is shared by all humans. Should emerge early in life w/o requiring much experience, found across cultures, distinct facial expression. Voluntary smile- only utilizes mouth muscles, like the ones you put on for a photo. Duchenne smile- involves mouth muscles & the eyes muscles along it, aka full/ spontaneous. Facial feedback hypothesis- idea that emotions arise partly as a result of the positioning of facial muscles, b/c they send feedback to the brain about the basic emotions being expressed. Misattribution of arousal- failure to interpret signs of bodily arousal correctly, which leads to the experience of emotions that ordinarily would not arise in the particular situation. Display rule- social & cultural rules that regulate when, how, & where a person may express (or suppress) emotions.
