Document Summary
Lesion method: damaging or removing sections of the brain. Electroencephalogram (eeg) : detect electrical activity of neurons in particular region of brain. Pet scan (positron emission tomography) : records biochemical changes in brain as they are happening in different locations. Mri : uses magnetic field to show picture of soft tissues. Huge machine that gives a detailed picture of the brain (can give slices of the whole brain) Measures relative activity of various brain areas during tasks (how the brain changes when a person is doing something ) Older brain structures: the ones that are essential for survival. Controls involuntary behaviors and primitive behaviors under voluntary control. Medulla: controls basic bodily functions ( heartbeat, digestion, unconscious breathing ) Pons: regulates sleep and arousal; coordinates movements from left and right side of body ( crossover ) Directs incoming information from sense receptors (eyes, taste, touch) to cerebral cortex. Control arousal ( sleep, wake ); attention (filters out unnecessary info)
