By the time of the renaissance, full range of music textures and compositional devices had been discovered. Prototypal form of chordal and tonal system was established. By the 1580"s, it was established that the madrigal was inadequate. Looked at greek tragedy as a model which was led by girolamo mei. Mei edited many greek dramas, which lead him to investigate greek music and its relationship to drama. Concluded that greek drama contained strong emotional powers from start to end. A single melody is sung throughout regardless number of voices or instruments. Mei said that voice evolves with emotions of the speaker. Recitativo - new style of singing where a single line of melody can be used to change tempo, rhythm, and range. First example is found in the first complete opera made by jacopo peri.
