Majority of spirituals use major pentatonic scale. Also common in slave music bc it kept the slaves moving and their spirits high as they listen to music using the major scale. Used in british folk music as well. Minor scales was found in sorrow songs and was regarded as a prototype for the blues. It was a gapped scale too, missing 4 and 6 scale. African american musicians would combine the two different scales. Minor pentatonic scale found itself in early rock n" roll and jazz, and country music. Whole tone scale is tonally vague compared to the western scales. Well suited for music that seeks to create a mood. Debussy"s voiles is a an example of atmospheric music.
