Can be used with rests and function in the same manner. Beat is a regular pulse that becomes apparent at a certain rate and maintains that rate. Tempo - variety of rates of the beat in one song. Common problem with ^ is that it does not indicate a definitive speed. Tempo can be decided by the interpretation of the composer, giving a lot of freedom. Grouping of beats into 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, etc.
