Function of the cardiovascular system to transport! Gases: o2 (to tissues, co2 (to lungs) Hormones from endocrine glands to target tissues. All this to maintain the conditions of the internal environment within a narrow range (homeostasis) The cardiovascular system is formally composed of: blood vessels tubes/pipes the blood travels through, heart the pump. Would not function without: blood carrier of cells (red and white), nutrients, etc. Prevent fluid loss due to injury - clotting. Blood is contained within blood vessels (~blood circulates through the whole system once/minute) Three types of blood vessels: arteries, capillaries, veins. Arteries, capillaries, and veins all contain a lumen. Structure and function of blood vessels: arteries (smooth muscle = involuntary) Pressure (most of the pressure in this system is from the arteries = pressure reservoir) Arterioles smallest arties barely visible to naked eye. Walls have same three layers as arteries. But middle layer is primarily smooth muscle, few.
