Phonetics gives us the raw material we analyze in phonology. Speech and language therapy are both fields (emphasis on the fact that they are different) that engage in phonetics outside of the field of linguistics. Speech therapy is the rehabilitation of the physical production of speech whereas language therapy is the rehabilitation of the faculty of language. The amount of phonetics and anatomy that we will study in this class is minimal in comparison to the material covered by medical students. There are three crucial areas of phonetics: articulatory phonetics. Studies the waveforms from the speaker to the listener: perception.
