The question of identity is a question of representation . We like to put the authenticity of an object on the authenticity of a person/ people. They assume the vendors are indigenous if they look/ act/ dress a certain way, that they are from a place, assumptions of identity. It depends on the vendor and the nature of the assumption. Questions such as what is your native language? . It is either regional (so north and south) and sometimes by skin color. Also appearance and skin color (people would think of someone who is darker) Indian is always equated with poor - has been and continues to be.
