All volunteers with 1 year conscription to vietnam. Trading their future, freedom, body in order to fight. Exporting young, korean men for money (paid a month for soldiers) Koreans name them viet-cong; recognition of people identity. Questioning motive of why americans were there. Soldiers are not glorified, veterans were not treated well, anti-heroes; damaged generation of men. Not derided, ambivalent reception; stereotype for korean veterans. Questioning of his lack of warfare; no kills, emasculated, impotent. Entrepreneur, followed president park made money; soldiers on the other hand did not receive service and only received ptsd. Need to sell their labor and bodies (military context and prostitution) Saved u. s economy and saved korean economy and business. Not many chances to leave the country, but this was a chance. Identification, parallel lifestyles as young children (han), young soldiers do not remember the korean war as well. Han identifies well as civilians compared to americans or other korean soldiers.
