Document Summary

Environmental microbiology: earth is a microbial planet, humans have no essential contribution to sustainability of life. Microbes: most abundant organisms on earth, bulk of earths biomass. Involved in most of chemical transformations of matter. Figure 25. 1 - the flow of energy and nutrients in ecosystems: sun - radiant energy, producers, transfer consumers, decomposers. Intro: the study of the chemical transformations by living organisms and their effect on earth, ecosystem - all of the organisms in a particular area + abiotic factors, biosphere - region that is inhabited by living organisms. Components: hydrosphere, lithosphere - soil and rock of earths crust, atmosphere. Cycles - the movement of matter through the biosphere. Figure 25. 2 -- the water cycle: microorganisms, metabolism, habitats, survive drought as spores/cysts. Figure 25. 3 -- the carbon cycle: producers - plants, cyanobacteria, algae, consumers - obtain carbon through ingesting producer or other consumers, respiration, combustion, microbial decomposition.
