Document Summary
Binds loosely to hb reducing its affinity for o2. Because it"s a byproduct of glycolysis, it means we"re doing work, which means we need more o2. Causes greater o2 release to the tissues. 2,3 dpg increases with intense exercise and may increase due to training (as well as living at altitude) Females have higher 2,3 dpg levels than men of similar fitness status/activity level; may help compensate for the lower hb. Myoglobin is an iron-containing globular protein in skeletal and cardiac muscle. Myoglobin only contains one iron atom and is found in the muscle. Contrasts hb bc it has 4 iron atoms and is transported to the muscle. Only one iron atom means there"s no cooperative binding. Facilitates transfer of o2 to the mitochondria, particularly when exercise begins and during intense exercise when cellular po2 rapidly declines. Not an s-shaped dissociation curve like hb (fig 13. 4) Myoglobin actually binds and retains o2 at low po2 more readily than hb.
