Based on vasodilation effects on l-arginine due to stimulation of nitric oxide synthase. The idea: increase pump, increase nutrient delivery, reduce peripheral resistance, enhance gh response. The reality: l-arginine supplementation has mixed support, but generally does appear to improve performance. There is some evidence that l-arginine-l-aspartate may improve endurance performance and reduce blood lactate, but there are very few studies on this in humans. This would have negative effects for anaerobic exercise. There is some evidence to suggest glutamine supplementation does what is claims, but the most convincing evidence is for its role in immune function. Belongs to a group of compounds called methylxanthines (coffee beans, chocolate, tea leaves, cocoa beans) - pill form better than these. Appears to stimulate e release (and ultimately camp) May act directly on muscle to enable more prolonged endurance performance. Ioc and ncaa have upper limits on urinary caffeine concentration allowed. Human body can synthesize ~1g/day from arginine, glycine and methionine.
