Document Summary
Automated external defibrillator: lightweight, portable, computerized device that can identify an abnormal heart rhythm that needs a shock. The aed will deliver a shock that stops the abnormal heart rhythm and allows the normal heart rhythm to return. Chicago airport was where the first aed was. New jersey was the 15th state to have access to aeds. Usually a 12 minute response time for ems. Defibrillations should occur between 3-5 minutes of collapse. Chances of survival decreases 7%-10% every min. a person is not defibrillated. 2 location: chest and side so shock can go through the heart. Beneath clavicle, in line with the axilla (arm pit) *1-8 is a child; less than 55 pounds. *may have to adjust to ap position (one on chest, one on back) Is immersed in water or has water covering the chest. Has a transdermal medication patch or other object on surface of skin where the aed pads are to be placed.
