Most ends up in landfills and incinerators. Electronics have many things in them that can be reused. E-waste often gets transported to developing countries, which sees this as valuable. Bans transferring hazardous wastes from developed to developing countries (not ratified by the u. s. , so it is not illegal in the u. s. ) A lot of our waste ends up in china. By 1955: largest landfill in the world. 1991: only operating landfill receiving residential garbage. Currently, nyc garbage shipped out of state. Now, it is being developed into a park. Stopped operations in 2001 over environmental impact. In order to convert the area to useful space, they put soil on top. Capture and prevent emission of air polluting gases. Made laws that children of a certain age were not allowed to be in the dump and if they were there, they could be removed. Plants were put in to capture the emissions from the dump and use it for energy.
