Metacognition involves (cid:324)thinking about thinking(cid:325) that increases our capacity to learn and memorize. Ability to use metacognitive strategies increases with age. Learning strategies involve intentionally using certain approaches to understand concepts. Check notebooks, provide note taking guides, model note taking. Choosing the appropriate information to include in a summary is also a skill to be taught. Annotation: makes a student"s thinking overt so a teacher can monitor comprehension. Look back at notes to make sure i understand how to do the problem. Tends to be difficult because the majority of learning strategies are done covertly. Unless students are motivated to learn, the probability they will use learning strategies is very low. Learning strategies must be assessed and spiraled through every lesson so they can become habits. Beliefs about the nature of knowledge or knowledge acquisition.
