Document Summary

Chapter 3: individual views of delinquency - choice and trait. Choice theory - juveniles commit crimes because it is a free choice, they weigh the pro"s and con"s. It is a rational choice that the gain outweighs the loss. For example, if a juvenile wants a new car but can"t pay for it. They will look at the advantages of driving a new car compared with the loss which is to be brought into custody and punished. In today"s society, juveniles are faced with increased pressure from media, peers, etc to gain possession of the latest fashions, phones, etc. Delinquency - occurs when you have 3 things present 1. Suitable targets means that they are "easy" victims, items present that can be stolen. Capable guardians are parents, police officers, teachers, coaches or others that keep an eye out for the juvenile. Deterrence - this involves making juveniles fearful to commit crimes.
