Why do you think there are differing expectations about police roles: so many different types of policing units. Rupd, nypd, nbpd, amtrak pd, nj transit pd, state troopers, etc: police departments change what once was good can turn to poor quality. Officers and departments have dynamic roles always changing and adapting. Functions of the police: 5 basic responsibilities. Structure of police organization: field services line. Assigned by needs and times for service. Deal with patrol direction, traffic, and invesigation: administrative services staff (support line) Dispatching, communications, personnel, records, training, research and planning, public information, property. Supervision and leadership: traditional innovative supportive and active different supervisory styles, street cop and management cop two different cultures. Differ on definition of community crime and safety. Street cop daily interaction with community. Management cop planned meticulously with resources to deploy. Both in charge of dealing with crime.
