Culture inluences and is inluenced by our communicaion. Complex combinaion of common symbols, knowledge, folklore, customs, language, informaion-processing paters, rituals, habits, and other behavioral paterns that link and give a common idenity to a paricular group of people at a paricular point in ime. Symbols of a society are possibly the most visible signs of culture. Communicaion, then, is the means by which individuals create, share and perpetuate culture. Orientaions towards religion, poliics, gender, courtship, child rearing, racing, etc. Creaing a context for interacion and negoiaion among members. Through communicaion, we shape our cultures; and our cultures shape our communicaion paterns. Cultures are complex and mulifaceted (pg 268, igure 14. 4) Each of these issues inluences another: high infant mortality lead to larger families for survival. In north america, family size is decreasing due to cultural factors like economics, customs, technology, social condiions and gender aitudes. Context refers to the events and meaning of events.
