We create our reality with others through communication. The mental processes involved in gaining knowledge and comprehension. The process by which a person filters and interprets information to create a meaningful worldview. You notice some elements (stimuli) in the situation but not others. You arrange the pieces you noticed into a pattern that makes sense to you (into a coherent pattern) Using personal knowledge and experience meaning(s) of the patterns are decided (assigning meaning to information) Occurs most frequently for unexpected and/or negative situations. Are behaviors caused by the situation or characteristics of the actor. Could the actor have acted differently/were these actions intentional. Distortions in conclusions we reach about the causes of events. Tendency to make internal attribution for other people"s behavior. Tendency to make external attributions for our own behavior. Provides a window through which we make sense of the world. Focusing on the focal event vs the context.
