Modern approaches center on the extent to which meaning is created between individuals in an organization, between individuals and organizations, and between organizations and society. The modern focus is on the process of communication in an organizational setting as opposed to an organization as a container . Systems metaphor focuses on the interdependencies that develop when people interact with one another. System -a group of individuals who interrelate to form a whole. Nonsummativity -the whole is greater than the sum of its parts (fisher, 1978) Synergy -the ability to achieve more together than with individual effort. Negativity synergy -group achieves less than the individual parts would suggest members. This is the main reason why nonsummativity occurs.
