Paul watzlawick, janet bevelas, and don jackson. All behavior has the potential to be communication regardless of intention. All communication has a content and relationship level. Content level: the message that is sent. Relationship level: how the content should be understood. Communicators punctuate sequences of behavior differently which may affect meaning. People communication through digital and analogic code systems. Digital linguistic symbols are arbitrarily linked to meaning. Example: what sound does a bee make? (cid:324)buzz(cid:325) Analogic direct connection between symbol and its meaning (usually nonverbal) Example: a kiss from someone you love. Example: what sound does a bee make? (cid:324)bzzzzz(cid:325) Holding up 5 fingers to say it"s 5 o"clock. Symmetrical communicators behave in the same way. Example: you use a friendly tone of voice to your supervisor who uses a friendly tone of voice to you. Example: you and your significant other are always honest with each other. Complementary communicators behave in different ways.
