Document Summary

Rates of many reactions depend on concentrations of reactants. Chemical system can reach equilibrium when rates of opposing reactions equal . Assumptions about reactions so far (1) reaction only goes in the direction indicated by equation (2) completion of reaction occurs when no limiting reactants are left (assuming all reactants were limiting) Which reaction is the forward reaction depends on how reactions is written. Some reactions may be reversible to such a small extent that they would appear un-reversible to naked eye. Rate of forward reaction is fast at first, rate of reverse reaction slow at first. Eventually, concentrations of species balance out over time (cid:1543) equilibrium. Dynamic equilibrium (cid:1543) condition in which rate of forward reaction = rate of reverse reaction. Concentrations of products and reactants no longer change. But still dynamic because there"s movement on molecular level. Total products and reactants are present (to some extent) Not a state where all concentrations are the same.
