01:160:161 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Atomic Radius, Noble Gas

24 views2 pages

Document Summary

Energy change that occurs when e- is added to gasous atoms. For the first e- added to many atoms, energy is relesased. Trend is not as clear cut as for ie -but generally smaller atoms have larger e- affinitys (more energy is released) Many 2nd e- affinities of neutral atoms (add an addiotional e- after adding 1 e-) are represented w/ a positve sign (energy is absorbed) Group 7a=> adding 1e- fills the shell (gives it e- config of a noble gas)=> beneficial e is released. Group 8a=>adding even 1e- goes to the next principle shell (higher in energy) =>not beneficial (energy is absorbed) Group 2a=> adding 1ei to the p orbital (higher e than s orbital)=> not beneficial (energy absorbed) Metallic character- increases from top to bottom in a group and decreases from left to right in a period.
