Nematodes: dianosis of infection, perfection gold standard. A test with 100% specificity and 100% sensitivity. In practice, this is rarely available: gold standard. Specificity and sensitivity are less than perfect gold but well defined: fecal sample, direct wet smear, ~ 2mg feces and a few drops of saline. Slide, microscope, not useful when infection is low. This can lead to false negatives: formalin-ethyl acetate sedimentation concertation. Fecal concentration technique allows detection of small numbers of eggs. Ethyl acetate component extracts debris and fact from the feces: method, mix ~ 4g of feces with formalin and strain through gauze, add saline to increase volume and put in centrifuge. In life cycle, the normal definitive host is the dog. Do not complete normal development to adult stage. Undergo development arrest: most times the juveniles just go through an extended random wandering through the body, damage liver, lungs, brain, etc, ocular larva migrans produces inflammation and scarring blindness.
