01:119:150 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Hydrogen Sulfide, Planned Obsolescence, Domestic Energy Consumption
Document Summary
Energy exchanges occur whenever an object is chemically heated, heated, cooled, or moved. Consumption of energy leads to depletion of natural resources and pollution. Controversies arise between those who want to leave nature alone and those that favor progress. Use of energy leads to social, economic, and ecological problems. Tunnel mines (surface of land is left intact, dangerous, expensive, polluting, collapsable, pathological/cause diseases) Strip mines (cheaper, surface of land is defaced, found in areas around the world) Energy consumption can be reduced by individual conservation and technology. Individual conservation (check recording for methods of individual conservation) Technology (such as fuel efficient, pollution free machines and automobiles) Whenever petroleum is refined, there is serious pollution and waste heat is generated. Pollution can be reduced by reducing energy consumption. Most promising solution: union of social, economic, and technological changes. Public was not aware of commercial availability, some believe the high capital investment outweighs low fuel bills.
