Document Summary

L8 plant diversity ii: adaptations of seed plants, reduced gametophytes, microscopic, develop from spores w/i sporangia of parental sporophyte, totally dependent on sporophyte generation (dominant generation) Sporophyte protects gametophyte: heterospory- production of 2 diff. types of spores, megaspore female gametophyte, microspore male gametophyte, ovules & production of eggs, ovule- megasporangium, megaspore, & integuments. Integuments- layers of sporophyte tissues form seed coat surround. & protect megasporangium: female gametophyte- develop from the megaspore & produce 1 or more eggs, gymnosperms- megasporangium surrounded by 1 integument. Angiosperm- surrounded by 2 integuments: pollen & production of sperm, pollen grain- develops from a microspore. Consists of a male gametophyte enclosed by a pollen wall generative cell sperm. 1 cells: tube cell pollen tube: sporopollenin- in pollen wall, protection, pollination- transfer of pollen to part of plant that contains the ovules, not the same as fertilization, sperm are not dependent on h2o for dispersal. Each ovule contains a megasporangium: pollination- pollen grain reaches ovule germinates.
