Taxonomy= sci. of describing, naming and classifying organisms. Genus is unique and used alone to specify all spp within genus. Taxon (taxa, ppl)= grouping of organisms at any one of these levels. Phylogenetic tree: branching diagram that represents evolutionary history of group of organisms. Extant spp= spp currently living, at tips of branches. Analogy= similarity betw like features but separate evolutionary origins. Evolution= accumulation of genetic changes within pop over time. Not changes in an individual during their lifetime. Acts on phenotypic variation: preserving if beneficial, removing if detrimental. Tobacco plants marked with spots: gives leaves a mosaic coloration. Transmitted tmv by rubbing extract from diseases plant onto leaves of healthy plant. Martinus beijerinck: dutch botanist (late 19yh century), did experiment- fig19. 2. Not a bacteria: sap is filtered (so smaller) Replicate in plant: cause diseases after transfers btw plants. Cannot be cultivated on nutrient media in test tubes or petri dishes.
