At birth = 1-2 million 1 degree oocytes. At sexual maturity = 200,000 1 degree oocytes. Each 1 degree oocyte housed within a follicle -> many follicles. Zona pellucida forms between 1 degree oocyte and follicle. Each month 6-12 follicles mature only one completes cycle: 1 degree oocyte completes meiosis 1. 2 degree oocyte released from ovary -> oviduct.
