Document Summary

Classification of feedstuffs: forages/roughages, energy concentrates, protein concentrates, mineral supplements, vitamin supplements, non-nutritive additives, forages/roughages, definition. Forages are a major source of feedstuff for our production animals! These are difficult to define because in reality you will see these terms are used interchangeably, but have different definitions used in feedstuff. Forage: high fiber containing feedstuff; the plant material fed directly or dryed that is. Roughage: the byproduct that is high in fiber would be an example of a roughage. Example: in the south there is lots of citrus, so citrus pulp from making juices: defining characteristics. Forages occupy a large amount of volume (bulky feed) in comparison to what grain would occupy that has the same mass. Forage/roughage: low weight/unit volume; low bulk density. Relatively high fiber content-- at least 18% Due to the cellulose and hemicellulose content in the cell wall. Tend to have a high cell wall content. Vary in contents of protein, minerals, and vitamins.
