Growth becomes more rapid during last 4 weeks of gestation birth weight between 1 and 1. 5 kg. Immediately after birth growth rate increases dramatically: piglet almost doubles body size in first week. Rapid growth after birth due to 2 factors: (1) as fetus nears birthweight, seems to slow growth could be due to placenta (cannot support large fetus) Once born, growth is unrestricted (2) milk is good source of e and protein newborn has abundant, high quality, digestible feed fueling growth. Proper care of neonate right after birth is critical to ensure health and well-being of animal. Dam should have clean, dry, ventilated environment to give birth decreases newborn"s exposure to disease / pathogens. Temperature should also be warm: most newborns cannot regulate their own body temperature. Ruminants brown adipose tissue that can break down and release heat when born. Pigs little brown fat: cannot regulate body temperature well. Newborns need to receive colostrum from dam within first 24 hours.
