Cotton was only thing to do well: tenant farmers, merchants, planters only ppl give out loans, lien exchange, crop lien system spread through south by railroads, new comm, africa & india competition for cotton w/ south. Cotton $ dropped, south"s capital dropped, ppl screwed. Stuck to system like serfs: high interest rates, put many people in debt.
