Chapter 16: the civil war: communities mobilize for war, fort sumter: the war begins, in charleston, sc harbor. 1st crisis for lincoln: the fort was low on supplies. Worth abandoning, or fight to still have it: ft. sumter in south carolina, claimed by both confederacy & union, lincoln sent relief force w/ supplies (no weapons), told sc governor, jefferson davis orders gen. p. g. t. Beauregard to demand surrender of fort & attack if they didn"t listen: april 12, 1861 beauregard opened fire on reinforcements, they surrendered the fort. Ft sumter now confed stars and bars: the border states, first secession 7 deep south states, ft sumter crisis & lincoln calling state militias made other states take sides, undecided- mo, ky, md, delaware. (all slave-owning). All had big assets: four upper south states (va, arkansas, tenn, nc) seceded, all of them followed va, confederacy capitol- richmond, va, mo- bordered miss river.
