Farm families, tight knit comm. , barter sys. Patriarchal in urban & rural setting, in families, legally. Wife was responsible for: food, clothing, child rearing, etc: social order. Husband- head: large landowners (plantation owners, merchants, artisans and yeomen farmers were about the same, tenant farmers, farm laborers. Social status and rank was distinguished by dress and manner; people of one class did not intermingle with the others. Local roads were crappy year round, states tried to make it better. National road (1808)- connected east to west. Waterborne travel was cheapest, but you could only move north to south (ms river + Atlantic ocean), but east and west routes (canals) needed to be built. Canal stats: 40 ft wide, 4 ft deep, 364 mi long, 83 locks, 300 bridges. Seneca chief, 1st boat to go in erie canal. Nyc became a commercial and financial supremacy. Other states started building canals, connected states together.
