Document Summary
Homeostasis (self-verification)- we seek information that fits how we already think about ourselves, self-serving bias. People with depression look for information that support their belief of self- worthlessness. Unrealistic optimism- people believe that they are more likely to experience positive events and less likely to experience negative events than when comparing themselves with the general population. When people enter a marriage, they do not believe that they will get divorced even though the divorce rate is around 50% Phenomenon of depressive realism- research shows that those with depression are more accurate about how others see them. Sackheim and gur- assessed self-deception with embarrassing admissions measure. People who answer no to embarrassing questions weren"t necessarily lying, they consciously believe no and bury their real thoughts in their unconscious, deceiving themselves. Those who score highest in self deception show evidence of being better off in almost all aspects of life.
