Either the prince doesn"t support allies, so he doesn"t have anyone to call upon. He makes the allies more powerful than he is. He will appear as vulnerable and needing their help. Can prompt them to take advantage of him. He says when confronted with a republic, either destroy it or live in it. The prince cant win the hearts and minds. The people are going to be swayable by other ideas. No matter what, the prince is not going to succeed. Machiavelli is not just trying to give the prince information that he has not heard before.
