Document Summary

This statue of the greek god hermes seems to be a kouros. It seems to be a glorified version of a man simply because it is one of the 13 main gods of. However, it is a roman replica of the original that we see here, which is very common for greek artifacts. The material seems to be marble and the pose of someone telling a message. Then again, hermes is the messenger of the gods. This kind of statue was probably kept at home as a decoration. It also seems logical that it was from the same area as the statues nearby as they were constructed in a similar fashion. However, i am confused as to why some smaller statues were broken apart whilst this remained intact. The title itself explains the piece as a portrait of rembrandt himself. It is not the figure of the painting but the mechanics inside of it truly define the portrait.
