Day 1 - logic of practice, reflexive sociology. He didn"t really make a point, just said these were interesting/important. Power does not shape us through force but works on how we self-govern. We turn ourselves into certain kinds of subjects. Foucault criticized (even by himself) for overemphasizing this. Werth thinks trump"s doing well because he"s not playing by the rules. Better to have polymorphic and supple concepts than defined, calibrated, and rigid. Parsimony - make things as simple as they can be. Need these in research so we can operationalize. Does not want to mistake concept for reality. Task of sociology is to uncover most profoundly buried structures of various social worlds as well as mechanisms which ensure their reproduction or transformation. Structure often regarded as external to subject and acting on said subject. B says this is a false dichotomy and that it grants the subject too little agency while overstating importance of structure.
