PHIL 316 Lecture 7: 9-17-15
Document Summary
Punishment takes away from the happiness of at least one person (the person who"s getting punished). Punishment is intrinsically meant to make you suffer in one way or another. When we punish somebody we"re doing bad to them, but, in general, as a society, we are not in the business of doing bad, but making people happy. Punishment is not about rectifying the loss of the victim. It doesn"t help my financial situation one bit if you are locked up in prison. You prevent them from repeating the same crime. In the short term, while he"s locked up, he cannot commit an more crime against society. People are more likely to commit crimes when they"re younger. We want to lock people up long enough so that they get older (because people are less likely to turn to violence when they become older).
