Immigrant women made their way to the united states using various means. Today"s article pushes against many of stereotypes of asian women in the west. The use of picture brides was extremely important to korean and japanese immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The marriage was already arranged and officially contracted before the two spouses came into contact. It was important that the two were already legal partners, so as to facilitate the arrival of the bride. Obstacles that would have kept unhappy brides in the u. s. Shame of having to return, especially if family was doubtful. 30,000 japanese women came to the united states as picture brides. Family formation that would support a more stable workforce (that men who are married would be much less likely to commit certain types of vices; that men would have more incentive to work.
