PSY-35 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Albert Bandura, Social Cognitive Theory, Observational Learning
Document Summary
Witnessing someone perform certain activities can increase or decrease diverse kinds of behaviour. Bandura and menlove used modelling treatment to reduce fear of dogs in children. After witnessing a fearless model engage in various activities with a dog, initially fearful children became more willing to approach and handle a dog. Modelling may explain the acquisition of abnormal behaviour for a review of the underlying mechanisms. Kids with phobias or substance abuse problems may acquire similar behaviour patterns. Served as president of apa and cpa. Developed social learning and cognitive self-regulation theories that in uenced the development of both learning and cognitive paradigms. Seminal work is based on the premise that it is important to study clinical phenomena. His initial work focused on social learning theory and on the idea that much of what we learn is through the process of imitation.
