Can help regulate our thoughts, emotions, motivations, etc. The ego can take measures to defend itself from the anxiety. The ego"s way of handling a threatening thought or an unacceptable impulse to protect itself and minimize anxiety and distress. When a couple breaks up, they usual hate each other right after.
