Introduction to Kinesiology
Notes

Statistics
○ 64% of Americans overweight or obese 2004
○ 10% of sedentary people will ever begin an exercise
○ 50% of people who start exercise program will drop out within first 6 months
○ Among adults, 30% do not participate in any physical activity and only 10-15% are
regular (3x a week 20mins)
○ Physical activity declines by ½ from age 12-21 for both boys/girls (70%-35%)
○ 50% youths from 12-21 don’t participate regularly
Reason for Not Exercising
○ Time
○ Energy
○ Motivation
○ Skill
○ Resources
○ Support
○ Discomfort, injury
Determinants of Exercise Adherence
○ Personal factors
○ Social factors
○ Situational factors
○ Program factors
A. Personal Factors
○ Demographics (income, education, occupation, age, gender)
○ Behaviour (past program, participation, diet)
○ Cognitive/personality (self-efficacy, self motivation, beliefs, expectations)
B. Social Factors
Social support comes from:
○ Important others (physician, colleagues)
○ Family
○ Exercise leader
○ Other exercisers
○ Task and social cohesion
Social support has a small to moderate positive effect on exercise behaviour
Adherence behaviour is more strongly influenced by social support from important others than
from family members
C. Situational Factors
○ Convenience of exercise facility
○ Lack of time
○ Climate
D. Program Factors
○ Exercise intensity
Document Summary
10% of sedentary people will ever begin an exercise. 50% of people who start exercise program will drop out within first 6 months. Among adults, 30% do not participate in any physical activity and only 10-15% are regular (3x a week 20mins) Physical activity declines by from age 12-21 for both boys/girls (70%-35%) 50% youths from 12-21 don"t participate regularly. Cognitive/personality (self-efficacy, self motivation, beliefs, expectations: social factors. Social support has a small to moderate positive effect on exercise behaviour. Adherence behaviour is more strongly influenced by social support from important others than from family members: situational factors. Moderate intensity level best for adherence and maintenance. Theoretical approach to exercise adherence: health belief model, theory of reasoned action, theory of planned behaviour, heath belief model. Likely hood of engaging in preventive heath behaviours depends on ones perception of the severity of a potential illness vs. the appraisal of cost and benefits of taking action: theory of reasoned action.
