Blastocyst- a fluid filled hollow ball of cells. Blastocoel- the hollow cavity within the blastocyst. Blastocyst after zygote, amniotic cavity after inner cell mass. Gametogenesis: primary/secondary oocyte, fertilized secondary oocyte before meiosis ii is completed. Vernix caseosa, colostrum, the green stuff, wharton"s jelly. Vernix caseosa- (cheesy), covers the fetus"s skin and protects it from amniotic fluid. Colostrum- (foremilk)- not much lactose or fat, high concentration of vitamins, minerals, and protein (including antibodies) Meconium- greenish fecal material, includes ingested af, mucous, bile, and swallowed skin cells. Wharton"s jelly- found in the umbilical cord, a type of connective tissue. Why it may be difficult to become fertilized b/c of male or female. Premature capacitation (letting out of acrosomal enzymes from sperm) Ovaries alternate ovulation so of sperm may go to wrong ovary. Sperm may penetrate oviduct mucosa and get stuck/eventually die. Great length of female reproductive system - sperm die of starvation along the way.
