NUR 322 Lecture 9: Chapter 32
Document Summary
Chapter 32: caring for the child with a hematological condition. Wbcs: mobile units of bodys protective system, which mostly migrates to areas of serious. Rbcs: transport oxygen carrying hemoglobin inflammation and provide rapid defense against any foreing agent. Platelets: small fragments of megakaryocytes needed to maintain hemostatsis and perform vascular repair by collecting to form a plug. Anemia reduction in circulating rbc decreases the oxygen carring capacity of the blood, for the majority of patients, anemia is not a disease, but rather a symptom of other disease. May be insidious; child may be asymptomatic due to compensatory mechanisms. Cbc and reticulocyte count obtained to evaluate hemoglobin and hematocrit. For mild cases, provide supportive care through diet or vitamin supplement. For moderate to severe anemia, rbc transfusion may restore blood volume. For decreased rbc production, administer hepatopoietic growth factors. Anemia caused by chronic illness requires more instruction than self limiting episode.
